How Can I Win $10,000 CASH?
The top selling artist at the end of the campaign will be awarded $10,000 (CAD) CASH as a token of our appreciation and as our way to say Thank-you! Top selling artist is determined by: The most number of songs sold, whether sold as part of an album or as individual songs. For example, an album sold containing 10 songs would mean 10 songs towards the calculation of songs sold.

TIPS and TRICKS:
  • Is iTunes costing you $10,000? Although we do no enforce exclusivity, consider whether the few additional albums you sold on iTunes (or other sites) may have cost you the $10,000 if those albums were sold on PWYWO.
  • Buy download cards from us and distribute at your concerts and events.
  • Offer download cards with every admission.
  • Be creative and think out of the box to encourage album sale, e.g. house concerts, get your church, school, or business to help
  • Use the campaign and the idea of helping homeless youths to offer fans another reason to support you, e.g. organize a fundraiser
  • Work with us. We will be hosting concerts regularly and other activities to promote sales. Those who work closely with PWYWO will benefit the most.
  • Partner up with other artists

What is the New Business Model?
Pay What You Want Online is in the midst of rebranding to "Pay WHO You Want Online" and will declare itself as a social enterprise. Starting January 23rd, 2010, we will offer an additional level to the pay what you want model, and that is the "Who". PWYWO challenges fans to not only be well informed before you purchase music, but for them to consciously make a change by choosing to download music from an organization that is fighting for change. To the fans, PWYWO offers transparency, awareness on social issues, absolute control and choice. Fans select a rate they wish to contribute. This rate is then broken down so fans can see exactly where their money is going and how much of it. Regardless of what rate the fans choose to pay for a song or album, the artists are guaranteed a fair base rate; PWYWO takes a small fee to cover the administrative costs; the remainder is allotted to a cause by default. Based on where their values rest at that time, the fans have the option to add the remainder to the artist’s portion, leave it for the social initiative, or contribute to both.

What is a Social Enterprise?
We are rebranding to become a social enterprise and building community support right into our business model. Our mission is to raise awareness and funds for the rightful shareholders of the company: the artist, and the community. Our first initiative will be to raise $100,000 for www.urbanex.org and www.sketch.ca to support homeless youth and youth at risk, while helping artists to sell as many albums as possible!

Who Has Ownership of the Music?
As an artist you need to be and can be in control of how your music is released and most importantly be paid fairly for it. When you contract with us, YOU, as the artist, retain full rights to your music. We do not claim rights to or ownership of your material.

How Do I(the Artist) Get Paid and How Often?
For every transaction, artists can be paid in the following ways:

1) BASE amounts of:

  • base flat amount of $7.50 for ANY rate selected at $10.99 or above (e.g. $7.50 for an album sold at $10.99) OR
  • 65% when the selected rate is $10.98 or under (e.g. $7.13 for an album sold at $10.98). This is the same for both songs and albums.

2) Regardless of the rate fans pay there will always be an amount that will be available for the fans to choose to add to your base amount, to donate to the cause, or to split between you, the artist and the community cause.

3) In addition, PWYWO also pays 11% of our admin fees to royalties such as SOCAN/CMRRA/SODRAC which they distribute to artists and the appropriate parties registered with them

At the end of every quarter we will calculate and pay you your quarter's earnings if it is $50 or more. If less,it will be carried over to the next quarter. Payments will be made by cheque  and should arrive in the mail within 90 days of the last day of that pay quarter, or paypal (for international artists). We would love to make payments happen more quickly but there are sometimes delays as we respond to and ensure all royalty fees (e.g. through SOCAN and CSI) are paid out properly.

Still Not Sure?
  • Check out this link and read how Radiohead sold more of their album "In Rainbows" by 1) offering downloads over CDs 2) offering the downloads at a pay what you want rate 3) eliminating the record label.
  • The pay what you want model has also proven to work on our site. Fans are generally choosing to pay $9.99 to $19.99 per album.
